8 Spectacular Snow Destinations in Japan
Snowy Mountains, Scenic Spots, and Great Skiing
Does it snow in Japan? Absolutely. Discover the many faces of Japan’s snow. The snow season runs from November through May, revealing a different side in each region. Hokkaido is famous for its light, dry powder snow, while deep snowfall in the Tohoku region transforms mountains and towns into dramatic winter landscapes. Snow rarely settles in Tokyo or Osaka, so head north or into the mountains for spectacular scenery.
Peak snow season falls in January and February, when conditions are most reliable. Early to mid-December is often less crowded with better-value accommodation, while some destinations remain snow-covered well into April, perfect for spring skiing under clear blue skies.
Winter in Japan offers far more than breathtaking snowy landscapes. Soak in a steaming hot spring, discover traditions unique to its snow country, admire magical illuminations, and savor seasonal delicacies. Here are eight destinations to enjoy the winter season, from hitting the slopes to winter sightseeing.
